Upgrading procedure

Warning:  Improper upgrade procedure may cause the device to become inoperable and it will need to be replaced.

Note: If Window system has the proper XML service pack installed, the browser might not be able to display GUI configuration page.  In all of the cases we have seen, an error message is displayed after entering the login password. To resolve this issue, download and install the MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 from: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=3144b72b-b4f2-46da-b4b6-c5d7485f2b42&displaylang=en

Step 1. If needed, update the boot code.

  1. If the switch shows firmware version V3.x.x.x, log in the switch's GUI.
  2. Select Firmware > File Management > File Download.
  3. Follow the instructions to download boot code version 1.0.1.5 to the switch.
  4. When the download completes, reboot the switch. When the switch boots up, verify from the GUI that the switch's boot version has been upgraded to V1.0.1.5 before proceeding further.

Step 2. Update the switches in the stack.

In order to perform the software upgrade, you must break the stack and upgrade each device separately as a standalone device. The Master unit can retain its configuration setting throughout the upgrade process.  If you are upgrading a standalone switch and not a stack, go to Step 3, "Download the new software".

Disable the stack structure:

  1. Download the interim firmware (GS7xxTS-V310int.ros) and the V5.x.x.x firmware to your local Desktop computer.
  2. Disconnect all the stacking cables between the stack units.
The Master Unit software upgrade is available via the WEB interface with no need to restart or change the Management Interface IP address. For the other stack members: (backup and slaves) use the following procedure:
    1. Record the stack unit numbers first to preserve the exact configuration once the upgrade process is finished.
    2. Upgrade each unit individually.
      1. Press the "Factory Default" button located on the right corner of the Switch front panel for a few seconds until the Switch is reset.
      2. Once the Switch finalizes the power-up sequence, it receives an IP address from the default DHCP server located on the network or in absence of a DHCP Server, the factory default IP address is: 192.168.0.239.
Note: If there is no DHCP server on the network, the "Factory Defaults" procedure will cause all units will receive the same default IP address and communication to the device user interface will be lost.
  3. To complete the upgrade procedure for each unit, refer to the "Download the New Software" section.

Step 3. Download the New Software

Perform the following steps to complete the upgrade from version V3.x.x.x to V5.x.x.x:

  1. Download the GS7xxTS-V310int.ros interim firmware via TFTP using the GUI interface or the SmartWizard tool.
  2. Reboot the device. At the end of the reboot process, the interim firmware version is running on the device. The process takes a few minutes.
  3. Download the V5.x.x.x firmware via TFTP using the GUI interface or the Smart Wizard tool.
To use Smart Wizard to upgrade:
    1. Start the SmartWizard Discovery Utility, (included on the CD that came with your Smart Switch). If it is not installed, do so now, before continuing.
    2. In the SmartWizard Discovery window, click Discover to find your Smart Switch. When discovered, the switch will be listed in the device list table.
    3. Highlight the Smart Switch to upgrade and click Firmware Upgrade.
    4. Browse to the location where the firmware image is stored. Enter the administrator password and click Apply. Click Start Upgrade to start the upgrade process. Follow the screen prompts to complete the upgrade. SmartWizard Discovery will report a successful completion at the end.
  4. Reboot the device. At the end of the reboot process, the final code is running.

    For Stack infrastructure upgrade only:
  5. Devices which were disconnected from stack infrastructure need to be re-assigned their unit ID. You can do this using the WEB interface: System->Stacking->Advanced->Stack Management. Reboot the device for the change to take effect.
  6. After updating all the stacking units to version V5.x.x.x and restoring the stack unit IDs, reconnect the stack cables.
